Dr Who & The Daleks – CD

It's one of those delights in life when something turns up that you'd not really even considered might exist, so it was an early Christmas present to discover that the music, and some effects, from the first Doctor Who film, from 1965, has been released on CD by Silva Screnn. Not only that, but also some extracts from the second film in 1966, Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. , relevant singles and some sound effects. Bliss!

Some years ago, the "music and effects" magnetic tracks for Dr. Who & The Daleks were unearthed during the making of a documentary, and in the intervening years they have been cleaned up and brought back as near as possible to their original quality by composer and sound magician Mark Ayres, the CD's producer. Also, using up to date techniques Mark has extracted as much music as possible from the recordings remianing from Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.

What we get from all this work is a happy trip down Memory Lane for those of us who grew up with these films, as well as some interesting examples of these sounds of the 60s. The music for Dr. Who & The Daleks was composed by Macolm Lockyer, a known composer for low-budget British films, with Bill McGuffie providing the Sixties Space Age music for the second. Both films had electronic effects provided by Barry Gray, famous for his pivotal role in the success of the Andersons' puppet series. (It also means that Silva screen can put Gray's name on the CD sleeve: a good marketing move!)

The release is accompanied by a good booklet with lots of information. It's a shame, though, that some bright spark decided to give a Sixties colour-scheme to the pages, resulting in the last, lilac, page being almost unreadable.
