Steven Spielberg’s new film Lincoln was tipped for Oscar success after a high profile ‘unannounced’ screening at the New York Film Festival yesterday.

The film stars twice Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis as America’s 16th president in final months of office. It also stars Tommy Lee Jones who plays the powerful Republican congressman Thaddeus Stevens. Sally Field is playing Lincoln’s wife, Mary Ann.

Before the screening Steven Spielberg was on stage telling the lucky ticket holders that “this is a journey for me unlike any other, a journey through history I hoped would never end.” Then he mentioned that the film was a little “unfinished,” with some technical aspects remaining to be completed.

The response to the screening seems to have put the movie in the race for the best picture and best director Oscars.

Lincoln will start with limited theatrical release on November 9. A week later it get a fuller release across the States and Canada. The UK and Australia will get the film in January 2013.
