Actor Samuel Anderson is joining Peter Capaldi and cast of the Doctor Who 2014 season as a companion. He is playing Danny Pink, a work colleague of Clara’s. A fellow teacher at Coal High School.
Samuel was born in 1984 in England. He is known for the role of Crowther in the 2006 film The History Boys and for Ross Kirk in 105 episodes of Emmerdale (1972).
Coal Hill School is of course know to Doctor Who followers. This is the school in the very first episode of the show where first companions Ian and Barbara where teachers. It was seen in the 50th Anniversary story where Clare was a teacher at the modern day version of the school. You may remember the story started off with the 1963 homage to the 1963 episode with a police man passing the school sign.
On the BBC website Samuel Anderson is quoted as saying ‘I was so excited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started! It’s a quintessential part of British culture and I can’t believe I’m part of it. It’s an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can’t wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!’
Showrunner Steven Moffat said ‘For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who!’
Episode 4 and 5 of Doctor Who 2014 were filming recently. Episode 4 will co-star Robert Goodman (Gangs of New York, Game of Thrones). Episode 5 will costar Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch, Groove High), and Pippa Bennett-Warner (The Smoke, and tomorrows episode, 307, of Death in Paradise.).
Last week Samuel Anderson appeared as a model in the BBC series Death in Paradise. This is the bird watchers episode, episode 306, which can currently be seen on BBC’s iPlayer (free in UK and subscription in US). I met admit I have to re-watch this as I don’t remember the part of model…

Samuel’s appearance lasts all of 30 seconds, where he talks about having his bits of his body waxed for a photoshot, plus one 5 second shot of him showing off his muscles to a stranger! Camille was not impressed but let hope we are when it comes to his role in Doctor Who
