Lilting is about a tragedy that brings together a Chinese-Cambodian mother (Cheng Pei Pei) and the young British lad (Ben Whishaw), who was the “best friend” of her late son.
The film was made on a tight budget by writer director Hong Khaou for whom this is his first feature film. The film came about though Film London’s Microwave scheme which provided support and professional mentoring.

An intimate and thoughtful film about living in a world where you have no grasp of its language, and your only lifeline to that is lost.
Set in contemporary London, Lilting tells the story of a Cambodian-Chinese mother mourning the untimely death of her son. Her world is suddenly disrupted by the presence of a stranger. Though they don’t share a common language, a translator helps piece together the memories of a man they both loved.
Lilting is a touching film about unlikely connections and the tragedies that bring us together even though we may be worlds apart.
