The new Sherlock Special Trailer has Benedict Cumberbatch in Victorian England and explores the different role played by Conan Doyle’s female characters.
According to the limited press information this is a special episode has Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) facing a seemingly impossible case (surprise, surprise!). It is expected to be on air this Christmas and also be seen “on the big screen”.
It is again written by both Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. The read though took place last year, on November 22nd 2014, so we expect the episode is now in the can and waiting to be shown.
Explaining the background to the series co-creator Steven Moffat has said, “Conan Doyle’s stories were never about frock coats and gas light; they’re about brilliant detection, dreadful villains and blood-curdling crimes – and frankly, to hell with the crinoline. Other detectives have cases, Sherlock Holmes has adventures, and that’s what matters.”
Challenges in writing the Special
At Comic con this year Steven mentioned that, “With this new story is set in the same time as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories Steven said one of the challenges in writing the episode was exploring the different role played by Conan Doyle’s female characters.”
He explained, “One of the problems with the original, which we addressed in the modern series is that, for the most part, the women in the original Sherlock Holmes series don’t really speak very much.”
The special one-off episode will be getting the same treatment that Doctor Who got for it’s 50th anniversary and be shown in selected cinemas around the world.
Creator Steven Moffat has said the special will be a standalone episode so we can expect to return to be current day version for the three episodes due in 2016.
