Timed to coincide with events at London’s ComicCon PBS have announced Sherlock The Abominable Bride will air on 2016’s new years day, the same day as the UK.

Co-creator Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss with producer Sue Vertue where on stage in London bringing the news to fans of the US-UK Same Day Premiere on January 1st 2016. The Sherlock Special has Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in 1890s London. Mark informed the crowd that the story is based on Ricoletti of the club foot and his abominable wife. This is one of the cases Watson refers to in the original Sherlock Holmes stories but not one that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle actually expanded on.

The 90-minute Sherlock special stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Amanda Abbington, Rupert Graves and Una Stubbs. The special will have an encore broadcast on PBS on Sunday, January 10th 2015 at 10:00 pm ET.

Sherlock Season 4 will go into production in Spring 2016.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson find themselves in 1890s London.

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London.

Beloved characters Mary Morstan (played by Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mrs Hudson (Una Stubbs) also turn up at 221b Baker Street.

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride is a 90-minute Sherlock Special.
