Today CBS Television Studios announced it will launch a new Star Trek television series with a one off special in January 2017 and the rest of the episodes on their subscription based digital streaming service.
This will be a completely new series with new characters and not connected to the current rebooted film series aside from it’s executive producer Alex Kurtzman. He was co-Writer and producer of the recent films Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness. He has also been assigned the Star Trek 4 film which has a 2019 scheduled. Heather Kadin will also serve as executive producer on the new tv series.
Alex has a good track record and has worked on Scorpion and Limitless, along with Heather Kadin and Roberto Orci, Hawaii Five-0 also with Roberto Orci and Fringe also with Roberto Orci. You will also note a JJ Abrams connection running through his work.
We are told the new Star Trek television series will be “seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of Star Trek since Gene Roddenberry created it in 1966.”
Star Trek is coming up to its 50th anniversary in 2016 with the film Star Trek Beyond due to be released in the summer.
David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios said about the new series, “There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration”. He went on to assure fans that “Everyone here has great respect for this franchise” and that “we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”
