Pearl Mackie will be joining the Doctor Who 2017 cast as The Doctor’s new companion called Bill. Well you guessed from the title, we don’t rate the new companion for next season’s Doctor Who.
To us it looks like Showrunner Steven Moffatt has been watching the light-hearted UK series Benidorm and perhaps caught the sun! Series 8 of that show introduced us to a rather simple friend of Tiger’s (Danny Walters) called Joey Ellis (Nathan Bryon).
They managed to mostly get away with it. However even though we know Steven Moffat is good with comedy it might get wearing for a full season of Doctor Who with a companion that has a lot of on screen time! Just imagine Sontaran Strax for the full 45 minutes, every week.
Yesterday we had this tease,

Then today in the UK viewers watching the FA Cup semi-final Football match got this (as we all know Doctor Who fan’s just love football!).

And this for those not familiar with the character of Joey…
Benidorm Series 8 Episode 2 Clip
On joining the cast in her first major television role, Pearl said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family. It’s such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn’t be prouder to call the TARDIS my home!”
She went on to say “Peter Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, and his Doctor is such a wacky and wonderful character, I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space. Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in – I can’t wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series.”
And finished in the press release with this, “I always loved stage combat at drama school so I can’t wait to get on set and kick some evil monsters into the next dimension!”
“Shooting the trailer was absolutely mental, there were pyro technics and smoke and I met my first Dalek! I’m not sure it will ever become ‘the norm’ seeing crazy monsters on set, but I cannot wait to meet some more! The weirder the better, bring it on!”
Some viewers may remember her from one episode of UK daytime soap Doctor’s in 2014 or maybe from the small role she had in the film Svengali in 2013 which stars Martin Freeman.
Let’s hope Showrunner Steven Moffatt proves us wrong with some great writing and newcomer Pearl brings a bit of depth to what could have all the fan’s hating every moment of her on screen.
