With five episodes of Victoria aired in the UK it has been confirmed there will be a second season! And like the first it will consist eight episodes.
The series has Jenna Coleman as the young Queen alongside Tom Hughes as Prince Albert. This duo captured the hearts of viewers and will return for the second series. It was their off/on love affair that really made the show take off. US viewers will discover this early in 2017.
Victoria‘s ratings success
In the UK the show started airing at the end of August 2016. It’s been a huge ratings success, with the series averaging 7.7 million viewers and 29.7% share of viewing. It is the top rated ITV drama of the year so far! This even beat the second series of Poldark which also had strong viewing figures. In the UK both shows air opposite each other!
UK’s ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill and ITV’s Director of Television Kevin Lygo made the second series announcement today. Kevin Lygo said screenwriter “Daisy Goodwin has brought the characters so vividly to life.” He added “We’re thrilled with the reception for Victoria.”
Daisy Goodwin followed on filling in a few details. She said, “In the next series she faces the very modern dilemma of how to juggle children with her husband and her job”. She also commented, “As Victoria will discover, it’s hard to be a wife, a mother and ruler of the most powerful nation on earth!”
Executive producer Damien Timmer said, “The next few years of Victoria’s reign are packed full of extraordinary real life events. Constitutional crises, scandals at court and personal challenges aplenty for the Queen and Prince Albert. God Save the Queen!”
