The Zookeepers Wife tells the real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II.
The film is set in 1939 Poland and centres around Antonina Zabinska (portrayed by Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr Jan Zabinska (Johan Heldenbergh. Here the Warsaw Zoo is flourishing under their stewardship and care.
The Zookeepers Wife Story
When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are stunned. They are then forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl of Captain America: Civil War).
They then look for a way to fight back on their own terms. As a result Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance. They put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto. This means Antonina has to put herself and even her children at great risk.
