The upcoming Star Trek: Discovery series has today announced the latest in the castings. James Frain is the newest addition to the series.

James will star as ‘Sarek’, the famed father of ‘Spock’. James was in the movie Tron: Legacy in 2010 and in numerous television roles including a recurring role of Theo Galavan / Azrael in last years Gotham.

The character of ‘Sarek’ was first seen in the original Star Trek in 1967 played by Mark Lenard who was 43 at the time. The episode was titled Journey to Babel.
Mark Lenard’s ‘Sarek’ has made multiple appearances throughout the franchise over the last five decades. His ‘Sarek’ character appeared in many of the films such as Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). He also made an appearances in Star Trek: The Next Generation. In that he was in the episodes Sarek in 1990 and Unification in 1991.

The new ‘Sarek’ actor James Frain is from Leeds in the UK. He is currently aged 48 so is slightly older than Mark Lenard was when he first appeared as ‘Sarek’. Also worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery is actually set a 5-10 years before the original series.
Star Trek: Discovery was due to air Jan 2017 then May 2017 but has now been delayed again. When it is ready it will be on CBS/CBS Interactive and Netflix.
