Before the Beauty and the Beast press conference began, composer Alan Menken sang a medley of songs from the movie. He then invited Luke Evans and Josh Gad to join him to sing ‘Gaston’. Click below to watch their performance.

Beauty and the Beast – Gaston and LeFou’s story

Gaston (Luke Evans) who holds court in a country inn with his sidekick LeFou (Josh Gad). He has every eligible woman in town wrapped around his finger. Gaston is smitten with Belle (Emma Watson) but she is strong-willed and remains impervious to his charms. Belle rejects the relentless advances of the arrogant and boorish rogue.

LeFou is Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp. While not the brightest bulb in the box, LeFou worships Gaston. This is even though Gaston has no regard for him whatsoever and makes him the brunt of most of his jokes.

The egotistical village heartthrob Gaston and his bumbling sidekick LeFou were popular characters in the animated film. To transition them into human characters the screenwriters bestowed some new characteristics.

To make Gaston appear more contemporary and credible they made him to be a war hero. The character of LeFou provided much of the comic relief from the animated film. He was given some slight nuances as well. Making him less of a punching bag and more… gay!
