Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is being released 22 years after the events of the first film.
It’s a standalone sequel to Jumanji (1995). That starred Robin Williams, who died on August 11, 2014, and in someways the new movie can be seen as a tribute to him.

Producer Matt Tolmach is was a longtime fan of the original film and the children’s fantasy book that inspired it. As a result he re-checked out the 1995 feature with fresh eyes. He found, “I immediately felt there were more Jumanji stories to be told”.
Tolmach and writer Chris McKenna saw a new direction for Jumanji. Rather than bringing the jungle into our world, they would would bring the players into the jungle. Matt explains, “The game evolves, from a board game to a video game. [Here] the game will do what it has to do to be played”.
Filming after a initial delay began in September 2016 in Honolulu, Hawaii. As a result the initial planned December 2016 release is now December 20th 2017.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has been rated PG-13 for adventure action, suggestive content and some language. This compares with the original movie Jumanji (1995) which was rated PG. That was for for menacing fantasy action and some mild language.

In Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, we have the tables turned on four teenagers in detention. They are sucked into the world of Jumanji.
When they discover an old video game console with a game they’ve never heard of, they are immediately thrust into the game’s jungle setting. Here they are in the bodies of their avatars, played by Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan.
What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji – Jumanji plays you!
As a result they’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, or they’ll be stuck in the game forever…
