Check out this romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians Trailer. For those in the UK you might be surprised and puzzled about two things.

First it stars BBC Travel Show‘s reporter Henry Golding, yes you may well do a double take, he actually starring in a mainstream Warner Bros movie!

The other is the use of the word Asians. People in the UK would normally think of Asians as coming from South Asia countries are be Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans! Those from Southeast Asia such as from Singapore, Malaysia etc, that the film is about, are in the UK referred to as ‘oriental’.

Now having got that out of the way the film is a bit of a first for a Hollywood studio with an all South-east Asian cast… sort of…! Some are being picky in noting the Henry is half English and half Malaysian. But you get the idea, it tends to be another a group of people under represented in Hollywood.

Filming for Crazy Rich Asians started April 24th, 2017 and went on for 3 months. The movie is based on the acclaimed worldwide bestseller by Kevin Kwan. But judging from the trailer is just a really fun rom-com! Of the other actors of note to us is Michelle Yeoh. She is probably best know for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but recently she was in Star Trek: Discovery… in two roles one dead and one not!

Crazy Rich Asians Official Lowdown

Crazy Rich Asians follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore.

Rachel is excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family. However she is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors!

Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back. Jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Yeoh) are taking aim. It soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.

Jon M Chu (Now You See Me 2) is directing the contemporary romantic comedy, which features an entirely Asian international cast. Crazy Rich Asians is based on the acclaimed worldwide bestseller by Kevin Kwan.
