Yesterday Warner’s delayed Tenet yet again. Looks like it is living up to one of it’s alternate titles Merry-Go-Round.
It had last been due to be released on August 12th, 2020. But because the USA ‘human malware’ problem has got worse in the USA it seems unlikely that the majority of cinemas would reopen anytime soon.
This currently leaves Unhinged alone on it’s July 31st, 2020 release date. Yes, it did move just days after our last update! Will it really stay at that date? We can’t be sure but the whole situation does highlight a Hollywood chaos.
France is a good example that despite it’s strong local film industry it is dependent on Hollywood movies. When the cinemas opened there on June 22nd the numbers looked good with local films. But after the first week the numbers were only 35% of the July normal figures.
In the UK the cinemas where allowed to reopen July 4th but few have. The big chains Vue and Cineworld are only planning of opening on July 30th. However this might change if there are no big films from Hollywood to attract an reasonable audience.
Warner’s could decided to go with opening Tenet outside of the USA first. However they would be concerned with a gap of more than two weeks because of the prospect of piracy.
Hollywood Chaos solution?
In a few days time 20th Century Fox are due to launch publicity push for The New Mutants. That due at this years online only Comic Con. Maybe online is the way to go? Perhaps they could mix it with Cinema release where possible?
The alternative for films like Tenet, which was focused on a cinema release from it’s ‘inception’ (wink!), is they could go the way of other Warner films. For example The Conjuring The Devil Made Me Do It will now be released in 2021.
Many Hollywood films make 70-80% from overseas taking. So there needs to be some radical thinking when only some theatres can open.
Some movies could work financially with a mix of online and cinema. I recently finally got to see Parasite via online rental. It was exquisite on a 4k tv. Yes I know the US cinema chains would complain again. But they could give them a two week run ahead of a online availability. Also maybe some assurance that this was only during these difficult times to get things going?
Somehow the Hollywood studios need a way out of this.
