It’s race weekend and Siegfried is interviewing for the job of Attending Vet at Darrowby Racecourse. It’s a position he’s coveted for a long time and he works hard to impress the head of the racecourse, General Ransom.

Siegfried’s charm offensive seems to pay off when Ransom makes him an offer. But it’s not without its caveats and Siegfried is torn between his own personal ambition and his loyalty to James.

High risk bet

Tristan sets about collecting debts owed to the surgery. While doing so he takes a shine to Maggie, the new barmaid at The Drovers. But when one drink leads to another, Tristan loses the takings. As a result he has to make a high risk bet to try and recoup his losses and save himself from Siegfried’s fury.

Terrible pain

Meanwhile James faces the toughest challenge of his career when he diagnoses Hugh Hulton’s pedigree horse Andante with a torsion of the bowel. The horse is favourite to win at the Darrowby races but James believes the condition is inoperable. The animal is in terrible pain and must put it out of its misery.

It’s the first time James has had to euthanise a horse and he’s devastated by what he has to do. When Hugh Hulton discovers what’s happened, he accuses James of incompetence and threatens to sue the practice.

Post Mortem

Siegfried is forced to carry out a post mortem on the horse to determine whether or not James’ course of action was correct. This has James’s career and future in the Dales hanging precariously in the balance.
