The Green Knight opens in theaters on July 30, 2021. It is an epic fantasy adventure based on the Arthurian legend. First written as the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in the 14th-century; it was translated into English by JRR Tolkien.
The Green Knight Star & Director
Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, The Newsroom) portrays Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew. His quest is to find the Green Knight; a gigantic emerald-skin foe. During his unforgettable quest Sir Gawain encounters ghosts, giants, scavengers, a damsel in distress and thieves.
The movie is written and directed by David Lowery (The Old Man & the Gun, A Ghost Story). Way before shooting began, he acknowledges, ‘Dev had some really wonderful notes on the script. I tweaked the story accordingly.’
‘Gawain is sort of this spoiled brat,’ says Dev Patel. ‘I told David before I signed on that if we’re going to go on this extraordinary journey with him – amid sparse dialogue and many instances of questionable behavior – there has to be something that makes you root for him through this adversity.’
David agreed. ‘As much as I wanted Gawain to start from a questionable place, I also wanted people not to hate him. I knew that the endearing qualities Dev possesses naturally would be useful for this particular version of Gawain.’
Being King Arthur’s nephew in Camelot gives Sir Gawain an undeserving position in the kingdom . ‘He’s never really had to get his hands dirty or earn a place in the world or society,’ recognizes Dev. ‘He’s afforded a seat at the Round Table amongst all these great legends and knights. But he doesn’t have a legend of his own. For me this was a story about a young man going out into the world and finding his purpose.’
Also cast in the movie is Joel Edgerton (The Underground Railroad) as the Lord. He played Sir Gawain in Antoine Fuqua’s 2004 film King Arthur. ‘I love that little piece of trivia, the idea of continuing that legacy,’ says David. Joining him are Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider), Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Sean Harris (The King) as the King Arthur.
Battling one’s ego
In closing, Dev Patel admits he has a personal attachment to this film. ‘This story appeals to me in terms of the journey I’m on as a young man; the idea of battling one’s ego, building success, and finding what it means to be a noble, truthful human being.’
